Reasons I Love My Blackberry: #453

Another favorite Blackberry app is Vlingo.  With all the recent news about texting and driving, this is the perfect app to cover.  While I try to avoid it, I too have succumbed to the temptation of checking the Blackberry while sitting in traffic.  But I’ve also had the consious though about how dangerous it is and who distracted I was while doing it – not good!  Bottom line is that it didn’t stop me.  This is where Vlingo comes in.  I don’t condone texting or emailing while driving, but if you must, use this nifty little app that allows you to speak your text, email or command and it translates that into typed text (or the command you seek).

Vlingo can do almost anything you’d normally need buttons for – making a call, sending a text or email, searching the mobile web and more.  In my experience, I’ve found the voice recognition technology to be pretty accurate in a fairly quiet environment.  That said, it still make take you a couple of attempts to get it totally correct.  It’s really best for short messages and commands anyway.  I have had some frustration with the speed of the service; it sends your speech over your mobile connection for translation, rather than having the technology built in.  It doesn’t work at all where data service isn’t available.  Those with consistent 3G connectivity will probably never notice. Oh, and it’s available for the iPhone and in beta testing for Nokia smartphones as well.

So if you must send off that text or email when it’s not convenient to type, let Vlingo be your personal secretary.
