Netflix on Wii – finally!

I can finally quit being jealous of all you PS3 and Xbox owners out there, with your fancy added services on your gaming consoles. As I’ve written before, the availability of on-demand programming has hugely transformed our household. My Tivo box has been a lifesaver, allowing us to live our lives and keep up with our favorite shows without the constraints of the prime time schedule. We’ve enjoyed downloading movies from Amazon Unbox and Blockbuster, but Netflix and their extensive library has been elusive until now – it’s finally coming to the Wii this spring. CNET has an early hands on with the new service posted yesterday at Crave. It seems slightly cumbersome that you need a Netflix disc inserted into the Wii every time you want to watch a movie, and I’ll be curious to see how the quality compares for live streaming over WiFi vs. download then watch on Tivo. I hope it’s as good as CNET’s test; one of the downfalls of the download method is the time it takes – sometimes up to a couple hours. Hardly “on demand.”
FYI – although CNET says you can request a Netflix disc, it looks like they are actually only taking email addresses at this time, with the promise of an update when the service is available. Hopefully soon!
